can any 1 help me i run with my dog around my neighborhood at 6 am and she follows me but she gets carried away and goes on peoples lawn and stuff for like 5 secs and come back after like 3-4 times of calling her name .. its happens constantly any tips that can help her to follow me without roaming around or call her back quickly without hastle.. thanks

turn your back poke him in the side of the shoulder and make a short but firm tsshh sound at him. His behavior needs to be ignored. When he's in a calm relaxed state then you can reward him with cuddles, pats treats etc. You can't reinforce his negative behavior. You are the pack leader, not him. You must get back in control.

I'm glad you state that down & off are two diffrent commands. to many times I hear people say "lay down!" I ask them: do you want your dog to lay or down? They get it after your show them the dog is confused with two commands in one..thanks for clearifieing this.

I found this really helpful; my new puppy jumps on my kids and scares them sometimes so I want us all to have a way of consistently demonstrating to the dog not to do this. I would love to see a video on how to get a dog to not chase children though; the puppy knows the kids are nervous of him. Thanks for this vid though!

I've taught this to pups in my "fenced" back yard with no leash on. You have to follow the dog around the yard chanting the buzz word or command. Or course you're ALWAYS going to have your dog leashed when out of your yard (and in training). Also... (sounds gross but..) I stack a little poop in one area of the yard when training a pup for this. I take the pup to that area and it helps a dog to THINK ABOUT GOING when they smell pheromones from the feces already there. Very nifty!

This guy is right on. I learned this tip years ago and I tell ya...when traveling with dogs it's so nice to hop them out of the car - tell them your command (our phrase is a quickly spoken whisper of -potty!potty! ) and no joke...they "stop...drop...an go".

you guys seem to be missing the point. YOU need to be the pack leader. in every way. you can't just come in and be the pack leader when your dog is annoying you. watch more videos, read more information and do not treat your dog as if it a human, remember that dogs are decendents of wolves you need to be the pack leader.

One of the doggies got a really bad cough immediately after hitting the end hard. I took him to the vet, who gave him hydrocodone. He coughed and was afraid of the leash for a week (the dog, not the vet). Glad to say, he got over it, and I got over "correction" as a training method. He's now walking loose-leash better than his buddy.

I wonder if there's an age when these things begin to work? ie maybe it's too much to expect a pup to walk to heel all the time in the street? I'm hoping if I keep doing 'heel' for a couple of yards in between the mad dashing and stubborn sitting, the pup will get the habit eventually. I do 'heel' with treat in hand and he has to follow the hand.

Does this work? I have a 5 month old Staffy/Collie/GSD cross who's tiny, but pulls like mad. I tried the stop/walk training, that didn't work. Then I tried the walk a bit/give a treat one, that didn't work either. I'm tearing my hair out.

IT WORKED! My 13 mo rottweiler was a rescue dog & didn't have any training. Pulled constantly. In < 5 min, she followed me instead of pulling me. When there was a distraction, I quickly turned & walked away. She "snapped" herself quite a few times but she stopped pulling. If I shorten the leash, she stays close; if I let it out, she may go to the end but will not pull. Wish I had it on video to show it works for big, untrained dogs!

@darkchilde26 Are you holding the treat in your hand? If so, use a marker word or clicker instead so that you are getting the treat from a pocket instead. Then you can put the reinforcement on a schedule and reduce the number of treats you use.

a quick tug should be a correction to snap him into it. a consistent tension should be applied until he starts moving with you. the tension should be released when his/her mind is read to follow you, that is generally when they take a step towards you. if you have a puppy its different. you have to use his/her nose to make him/her follow you

@MyBigDingaLing : It's good that you're working on it. It can be really frusterating. The first couple walks it took me like 10 minutes to travel 1/2 a block. Sounds like your dog just needs reminders here and there. But try to use a WORD to remind him, instead of a tug. If you have to tug, you should STOP also...so he learns that he wont get anywhere unless YOU are leader. I have ZERO tolerance with my puppy, so that he doesn't get confused. It's work in progress tho!

I really enjoy watching all of these videos! I find them comprehensive, enlightening and easy to apply to my relationship with my own GSD. I like the approach, seems to be based on us as humans using our greater level of intelligence to understand the dog (behaviors/drives/instincts) and be responsible for communicating the right messages (by using that knowledge), and practicing until the dog understands too. I'm so conflicted over the tips you give- sometimes the things you're advising owners to do are tips that I've found very effective in my own training, but the theory behind your methods doesn't seem to have any basis in science. For example, I love the advice not to use the harsh tone or potentially threatening body posture for recalls, but I'd love to see the research that supports the trio of drives you're using as the foundation for this advice.

A few potential Defensive Drive commands I can foresee being necessary are: Heel, Sit, Down, Quiet, Let Go, Drop It, etc. You should obviously do all of these first in Prey Drive, and only when that has been mastered, THEN work on Defensive drive. You should work with a knowledgeable trainer in order to do this however, as Defensive Drive work, especially when done wrong, can cause your dog to lose trust in you. Prey drive work is fun for a dog, whereas Defensive drive work is emotionally rough.

Even though your post is 10 months old,your problem is an obvious one (At least to an experienced owner such as myself). Your puppy will continue to cry for most of her crating time (Especially at night when she doesn't notice any human activity),for most likely no more than One Week. This is perfectly normal,& it is the result of nothing more than her being homesick due to having just separated from her littermates. I got my GSD (now six) at 8 weeks. One of the reasons I picked her was because she barked tons and my mom wanted a guard dog. I like that she's protective and barks when people come into the yard (at one point a man ran from the cops into our back yard, he broke into the house down the street.. without her barking, we think it could have been us). But she barks at the neighbors, even when they're at their own door, now... I try and distract her from them, I'm not sure if that's right to do.

I don't see why it would be cheaper? My dogs are super skinny, they work for their daily food. However the dog in the video is not working for the food during this counter conditioning session, I am just pairing one stimuli with reinforcement. So instead of wasting a whole bowl of food, letting the dog eat it for nothing, I am using it for pavlovian conditioning.

All I have ever done is take the dogs for walks making them heel. I just keep saying heel over and over and forcing him to walk there with an 18" leash. After two or three walks like that they get it down with no problem.

I'm a pretty successful retriever trainer, so I must be doing something right. NOBODY worth a heck uses a e-collar to teach the heel command. I use a collar and a 6 foot leash to teach heel and there's no e-collar pressure or any other kind of pressure, but there's no food reward either. At the end of the training session the retrievers get to retrieve a bumper or a duck dummy...that's the reward.

No disrespect intended but you really, really don't know what you're talking about. Behavior is all about consequences. You go to work every week because you get a paycheck. When you're training your retrievers you are applying some type of consequence. The dog is either working to get something (treat) or working to avoid something (stimulation from an electronic collar). It's that simple.

You could build calmness to the degree that you want. I for example, have dogs that are calm enough around food, so I can work on complex tricks without them just staring at the food, or spinning and jumping. But not too calm that they are not motivated enough to do high energy tricks. I actually myself will do exercises to build arousal on food with my dogs. There are owners who will want to build calmness and others who will want to build arousal... depending on how the dog is at this point

If you think in terms of reinforcement... behaviors that are reinforced increase, so a 'hyper active' dog might not actually genetically be 'hyper active', the owner just kept reinforcing the dog and increasing the dogs likeliness to be more and more hyper, the dog is not consciously choosing to be that way, neuron connections have been formed in the dogs brain from behaviors the owner 'chose' to reinforce.

Everybody who knows dog psychology says that excitement is negative for the dog. But as you say, for us it seems like the dog is really happy when it's jumping around like crazy. What is it that makes excitement negative for a dog? What if the dog is wagging it's tail when he sees that you prepare food, or if it sits down looking really concentrated at you when you do it? Is this considered some kind of stress for the dog? Should a dog always be totally calm to be happy?

I can't tell you how HAPPY I am to find your channel! I grew up with a dog and my parents trained her much like your experience, punishment after punishment, nose in the accident, etc. I hated that :( I am going to be getting a small dog this summer (I've only had big dogs) so I was feeling a bit nervous about them not being smart enough to learn to behave. You and Kiko & Splash have made me realize that ALL dogs can be wonderful dogs! P.S. I can't wait for a no-barking tutorial!!

I have a dog that sometimes will eat his food over long periods of the day, saving it and what not, and whether or not this is good for him I do not know, but his meal portions are tapered for his size and he only gets two day, so we prefer him to eat it all at once. Anyways, I got him to eat (and calmly) by fixing up the bowl for him and then instead of putting it down, holding it in a corner so he can't see what I'm doing...He calms down, I put it down and he appreciates the meal and eats.

Yes, I do admit that the concept of 'calm assertive' is foreign to me, but that's because no one, including Cesar (and he's been challenged to do this) can define it or assert the criteria that chracterize it. Cesar adheres to 'dominance theory,' which is too complicated for him to actually understand, and he also believes that dogs are pack animals, which they're not, and he believes in an erroneous concept referred to as an 'alpha dog,' which doesn't exist.

Science is not a vague reference to a single article with limited relevance to your hypothesis. Your hypothesis is clear: Science shows that everything Cesar teaches is wrong. aka "nothing to offer", zero. I have already shown your premise false, so spending the next 7 years searching for data showing everything he says is false will be waste of time. Remember, I only criticized Dunbar's tone of voice. I'm still bothered by this. keeg, you actually admit that you don't know what the hell Cesar means when he teaches his theories. Calm assertive body language is a cornerstone of his method. How can you criticize something you don't understand and call it science? It is actually bias. In more rigorous fields, scientists will insist important experimental results are repeated and confirmed independently before fully accepting them. This is science.

I agree very few uniformed dog owners will use effective techniques to change a dog's behavior, particularly aggression. I have spoken with several trainers who say only R+ should be used. At least you have started using comments like "almost", rather than your previous knee jerk absolutist statements of before. Unfortunately, credentials mean very little. 7 years of biased thinking is still biased thinking. Often times people use metaphors to explain concepts, I apologize if this was overly sophisticated. It was to point out that the study by design documented the results of uninformed dog owners. You (and others) choose to take the results to support unsubstantiated blanket statements. I am still interested in any additional relevant research, if you have any to provide.

What is hypothetical research? I have never heard of such a thing. Also, the example of the 'hypothetical research' you give is out of left field and doesn't relate whatsoever to using R+ methods to train dogs. Also, what the hell is 'calm, assertive' mean? Try getting away from the Cesar videos and go study animal ethology for 6-7 years, then come back and we can talk further.

Confrontational methods 'can create agression of used incorrectly'? Confrontational methods are almost always incorrect in their use and almost always cause an increase in reactivity. Also, where did you read that R+ training with rewards is used to calm aggression? True aggression can never be cured by R+ training alone.

Here is new hypothetical research: A sample of 140 humans were observed in their homes as someone entered the house and instructed them to hand over their wallets. 25% resisted and showed aggression. Clear proof to use positive methods? What if 25% were approached by someone wearing a ski mask and the rest were approached by police officers. The data does not show (nor did it test) that calm assertive (correct) use of the techniques will not work.

Actually, I know which one you refer to, it seems to be the default counterargument, despite clear faults in drawing parallels to Cesar's techniques. It does in fact demonstrate that confrontational methods can create aggression if used incorrectly. Unfortunately, this is also true of positive methods, as owners will attest when they have tried to calm aggression by rewarding them. This is the only legitimate conclusion allowed by the data of the study.

Congratulations on earning your master's degree. Do you agree is it important to exercise your dog's mind and body? Do you agree that you should not reinforce unwanted behavior with attention or praise? If you answer yes, then you are contradicting yourself that Cesar has nothing to offer. In addition, I have no idea what you mean by 'aggressive dogs who will bite humans,' since any dog, given sufficient reason (in the dog's mind) will bite a human. Several studies over the past 10 years (check out the most well known one by the Univ of Pennsylvania) have provided clear evidence that highly reactive dogs, as well as those who have a history of frequent, unprovoked aggression, can be helped only through R+ methods with concurrent counter-conditioning.

There is no middle ground between science and non-science, thus no middle ground between Dunbar and Milann. That assertion by you assumes that they both have something to offer, but Milan doesn't. His methods are not new and are based on erroneous conclusions drawn from artificially constructed wolf packs in the 1940s and 1950s. You can find links to many papers on canine ethology on the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) site. By the way, I hold an MS in Animal Ethology.

I am in the middle ground camp between Dunbar and Cesar. What strikes me about this talk is his disdain for dog owners (and people in general). He is so abrasive he is "punishing" the audience for listening, and then he wonders why people stop listening. There is a better way to tell people they are wrong. I disagree that a dog (like mine) would rather die than feel momentary discomfort, but agree that as soon as the dog reduces aggression you should switch to PR and simply saying No.

Hahaha! Me too! I suggest his books too! I think in order to train a dog you need to be able to communicate with them... And since they will not ever speak English we need to learn their language in order to teach them ours. That is my favorite part of training: the communication.
